Instead of having a building talking about volcanoes, the building materializes as a volcano giving people the opportunity to experience and feel what could be such a unique natural element.
This physical and spatial experiment is organized in three sequences:
01_Outside
02_Inbetween
03_Inside
Outside : The building seems like a raw, unspoiled and unpenetrebale natural element from the outside. These features in association with the landscape-like shape clearly evoque a volcano. Local-hewn basalt stones cover the entire shape and reveal how the architectural concept both enhances and emphasizes the local context.
Inbetween : The in-between connects the outside with the inside thanks to a 70 meters long underground link. Taking advantage from the existing topography, this link goes literally through the ground to reach all activities. This unique space has been thought as a physical experiment, activating senses while distording time.
Inside : After the Inbetween spatial experiment, visitors are now discovering the very heart of the building welcoming the museum, people, activities, events, wildlife… A bright space guides visitors throughout the continuous circular shape.
